स्वरूप :
दिव्य रुपा कात्यायनी देवी का शरीर सोने के समान चमकीला है। चार भुजा धारी माँ कात्यायनी सिंह पर सवार हैं। अपने एक हाथ में तलवार और दूसरे में अपना प्रिय पुष्प कमल लिए हुए हैं। अन्य दो हाथ वरमुद्रा और अभयमुद्रा में हैं। इनका वाहन सिंह हैं।
पूजा विधि :
गोधूली वेला के समय पीले या लाल वस्त्र धारण करके इनकी पूजा करनी चाहिए। इनको पीले फूल और पीला नैवेद्य अर्पित करें। इनको शहद अर्पित करना विशेष शुभ होता है। देवी के पूजन में मधु का महत्व बताया गया है। इस दिन प्रसाद में मधु यानि शहद का प्रयोग करना चाहिए।
कथा:
कत नामक एक प्रसिद्द महर्षि थे,उनके पुत्र ऋषि कात्य हुए। इन्हीं कात्य के गोत्र में विश्व प्रसिद्द महर्षि कात्यायन उत्पन्न हुए थे। इन्होंने भगवती अम्बा की उपासना करते हुए बहुत वर्षों तक बड़ी कठिन तपस्या की थी। उनकी इच्छा थी कि माँ भगवती उनके घर पुत्री के रूप में जन्म लें। मां भगवती ने उनकी यह प्रार्थना स्वीकार कर ली।महर्षि कात्यायन ने सर्वप्रथम इनकी पूजा की और देवी इनकी पुत्री कात्यायनी कहलाईं।
महत्व
शिक्षा प्राप्ति के क्षेत्र में प्रयासरत भक्तों को माता की अवश्य उपासना करनी चाहिए। इनकी पूजा करने से भक्तों को आसानी से अर्थ, धर्म, काम और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है। उनको रोग, संताप और अनेकों प्रकार के कष्टों से मुक्ति मिलती है। मान्यता है कि मां के इस स्वरुप की पूजा करने से विवाह में आ रहीं रुकावटें दूर होती हैं। देवी भागवत पुराण के अनुसार देवी के इस स्वरुप की पूजा करने से शरीर कांतिमान हो जाता है। इनकी आराधना से गृहस्थ जीवन सुखमय रहता है। मां दुर्गा के छठवें रूप की पूजा से राहु और कालसर्प दोष से जुड़ी परेशानियां दूर हो जाती हैं।

चंद्र हासोज्ज वलकरा शार्दू लवर वाहना|
कात्यायनी शुभं दद्या देवी दानव घातिनि||
देवी सर्वभूतेषु माँ कात्यायनी रूपेण संस्थिता।

Meaning of Katyayani Mantra
Katyayani Devi is worshiped with full devotion on the sixth day of Navratri. Katyayani is the sixth incarnation of Goddess Durga.
Form :
Divine Rupa Katyayani Devi's body is as shiny as gold. Mother Katyayani with four arms is riding on Singh. He holds a sword in one hand and a lotus flower in the other. The other two hands are in Varamudra and Abhayamudra. His vehicle is a lion.
Worship Method:
They should be worshiped wearing yellow or red clothes at the time of Twilight Vela. Offer yellow flowers and yellow naivedya to him. Offering honey to them is especially auspicious. The importance of honey has been told in the worship of the goddess. Madhu i.e. honey should be used in prasad on this day.
Story:
There was a famous Maharishi named Kat, his son was Rishi Katya. The world famous Maharishi Katyayan was born in the gotra of this Katya. While worshiping Bhagwati Amba, he did very hard penance for many years. His wish was that Mother Bhagwati should be born in his house as a daughter. Mother Bhagwati accepted his prayer. Maharishi Katyayan first worshiped her and the goddess was called her daughter Katyayani.
Importance
Devotees striving in the field of education must worship the mother. By worshiping them devotees easily attain Artha, Dharma, Kama and Moksha. He gets freedom from disease, suffering and many kinds of sufferings. It is believed that by worshiping this form of the mother, the obstacles coming in marriage are removed. According to Devi Bhagwat Purana, by worshiping this form of Goddess, the body becomes radiant. Worshiping them makes household life happy. Worshiping the sixth form of Maa Durga removes the problems related to Rahu and Kaal Sarp Dosh.
