एक बार भोले बाबा और मां पार्वती पृथ्वी पर घूमने के लिए निकले । जैसे ही भोले बाबा और मां पार्वती पृथ्वी पर पहुंचे तो भोले बाबा ने मां पार्वती से कहा – कि पार्वती ,तुम पृथ्वी लोक पर किसी भी मनुष्य की दुख तकलीफ को देखकर विचलित मत होना । क्योंकि जो भी कोई यहां सुख और दुख प्राप्त करता हैं , वो सबको अपने कर्म अनुसार ही मिलता है । पार्वती मां ने हां कह दी और वे दोनों पृथ्वी पर घूमने लगे । घूमते – घूमते एक गांव में पहुंचे । उस गांव में एक घर में उन्होंने देखा कि एक सास अपनी बहू को डांट रही है और कह रही है कि गरीब परिवार की हमारे घर में पता नहीं कहां से आ गई है ? हमारी किस्मत फूटी थी , जो हमने गरीब परिवार से नाता जोड़ लिया । ना तो दहेज में कुछ लाई और ना ही इसके मां और पिता कुछ सामान वगैरह देकर जाते हैं । त्यौहार पर कुछ भी सामान नहीं लाते । तब बहू बोली कि सासू मां ,मेरी मां बहुत बीमार है और उन्हीं की दवाइयों पर सारा पैसा खर्च हो जाता है । मेरे पिताजी जब तक मुझे दे सकते थे , तब तक उन्होंने मुझे दिया । और अब सारा धन दवाइयों पर और घर खर्च में चला जाता है । इसलिए मेरे पिताजी कुछ नहीं दे पाते । मेरी मां बहुत बीमार है और मेरे पिताजी आज मुझे लेने के लिए आ रहे हैं । आप अनुमति दें ,तो क्या मैं अपने पिता के साथ चली जाऊं ? सास बोली – नहीं ,नहीं कहीं मत जाना , यहीं पर रहो । फिर घर का काम कौन करेगा ? थोड़ी ही देर में बहू के पिता वहां पर आ जाते हैं और हाथ जोड़कर कहते हैं कि समधन जी , मेरी बेटी को मेरे साथ भेज दीजिए ।
बस एक दिन की बात है इसकी मां बहुत बीमार है और इसे देखना चाहती है । सास ने कहा – ठीक है एक दिन के लिए ले जाओ । लेकिन कल शाम को मैं अपने बेटे को भेजूंगी और इसे वापस भेज देना । दोनों पिता और बेटी चल दिए । वहां जाकर बेटी ने देखा कि उसकी मां बहुत बीमार है और उसका नाम बार-बार ले रही है । वह अपनी मां के पास जाती है और पूछती है कि मां कैसी हो ? उसकी मां बोली बेटी तुम आ गई । मैं कब से तुम से मिलना चाहती थी । अब तुम्हें देख लिया ,अब मैं चैन से मर सकूंगी । बेटी बोली नहीं मां , ऐसी बात मत करो ,अभी तो आपको और जीना है । भैया और भाभी कहां पर है ? तभी उसके भैया और भाभी आ जाते हैं । वह अपने भैया और भाभी के गले लगती है । शाम हो जाती है उसका भैया अपनी पत्नी से कहता है कि मेरी बहन बहुत दिनों बाद मायके आई है , तुम उसके लिए कुछ अच्छा सा खाने को बना दो । तभी उसकी पत्नी कहती है कि घर में कुछ नहीं है , मैंने सिर्फ बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी बनाई है । पूरी ,पकवान के लिए घर में सामान नहीं है । तभी उसकी बहन वहां पर आ जाती है और कहती है कि भैया और भाभी ,आप कैसी बातें कर रहे हो । मैं अब भी इसी घर की बेटी हूं । अगर भाभी ने बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी बनाई है , तो मुझे वही बहुत पसंद है । मैं भाभी के हाथ की चटनी और बाजरे की रोटी को कब से तरस रही थी। आज जी भर के खाऊंगी । वह खाना खाती है और देखती है कि उसका पति उसे लेने आया है । उसका पिता कहता है , दामाद जी ! आप तो कल आने वाले थे ? फिर इस समय ? क्या बात है? सब ठीक है ना? पति कहता हैं कि मां की तबीयत बहुत खराब है और उन्होंने आज ही हमे वापस बुलाया है । बेटी मन में सोचती है कि सासु मां तो ठीक थी , फिर अचानक क्या हुआ ? जो उन्होंने मुझे आज ही बुला लिया । लेकिन वह अपने पति से कुछ नहीं कहती और अपने पति के साथ अपनी ससुराल चली जाती है । वहां जाकर देखती है कि उसकी सास बैठ कर आराम से खाना खा रही है । बहू अपनी सास से कहती है मां जी क्या हुआ ? आप बीमार हो ? सास बोली – नहीं ,नहीं , मैंने तुम्हें ऐसे ही बुलाया था । घर का रात का काम कौन करता ? इतने सारे बर्तन पड़े थे । बहू बेचारी बहुत परेशान हो जाती है और सोचती है कि मैं एक दिन भी अपने मां और भैया भाभी के साथ नहीं रह पाई । सास कहती है अच्छा यह तो बता , तेरे मायके में तेरे भैया और भाभी ने क्या खातिरदारी की तेरी ? बहु कहती है कि मेरी भाभी ने तो खीर ,पूरी ,कचोरी और भी पता नहीं क्या-क्या पकवान बनाया था । पेट भर गया पर मन नहीं भरा था खाते-खाते । सास मन में सोचती है कि देखो , कितना झूठ बोल रही है , गरीब घर की ,इसे कहां पूरी पकवान नसीब हुआ होगा ? कोई बात नहीं ,रात को सोने दो ,इसका पेट का ढक्कन उठाकर देखूंगी कि क्या-क्या खाया इसने । बहू यह कहकर रसोई का काम करके सोने चली जाती है । रात को उसकी सास चुपके से उसके पेट का ढक्कन उठाकर खोलती है और देखती है कि उसमें तो बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी थी । जब बहू अगली सुबह उठती है तो सास कहती है – तुम तो बहुत झूठ बोलती हो , तुम तो कह रही थी कि पूरी और पकवान खाया था , लेकिन मैंने रात को तेरे पेट का ढक्कन खोल कर देखा , उसमे तो बाजरे की रोटी और चटनी थी । बहू की आंखों में आंसू आ जाते हैं और उसकी सास उसे बहुत फटकार लगाती है और बहुत ही जलील करती है । बहू रोती रोती भगवान के सामने जाती है और हाथ जोड़ कर कहती है कि हे भगवान , जैसे मेरे साथ हुआ ऐसा किसी के साथ मत करना । सबकी इज्जत तुम्हारे ही हाथ हैं । हे भोलेनाथ , मैं आपसे हाथ जोड़कर विनती करती हूं कि आज के बाद किसी के भी पेट का यह ढक्कन ना खुले । ताकि कोई ना जान सके कि किस ने क्या खाया और क्या नही ? भगवान उसकी इस प्रार्थना को स्वीकार कर लेते हैं तब मां पार्वती कहती है कि हे भोलेनाथ , आप यह पेट का ढक्कन हमेशा के लिए बंद कर दो । ताकि भगवान के सिवा कोई भी इंसान ना जान पाए कि किसी का पेट भरा है या खाली है । कहते हैं कि उस दिन से भगवान शिव ने पेट का ढक्कन बंद कर दिया था । तब से पेट का ढक्कन नहीं खुलता ।

So that no human being except God can know whether someone's stomach is full or empty. It is said that from that day onwards Lord Shiva had closed the lid of the stomach. Since then the lid of the stomach does not open.
