बात उस समय की है जब हस्तिनापुर के राजा शांतनु हुआ करते थे । राजा शांतनु एक दिन शिकार खेलने वन में गए और शिकार खेलते – खेलते गंगा नदी के तट पर आ पहुंचे । गंगा नदी के तट पर उन्होंने एक बहुत ही सुंदर स्त्री को देखा । जिस पर वे मोहित हो गए और उन्होंने उस स्त्री से उसका परिचय पूछा ? स्त्री ने कहा कि – मेरा नाम गंगा है , मैं देव नदी गंगा हूं । अब तो राजा शांतनु प्रतिदिन गंगा नदी के तट पर आकर देवी गंगा से मिलने लगे । और एक दिन उन्होंने देवी गंगा के सामने विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखा । देवी गंगा ने उनके प्रस्ताव को स्वीकार कर लिया ,परंतु उनसे एक वचन मांगा कि विवाह के पश्चात् राजा, देवी गंगा के द्वारा किए गए कार्य में कभी भी कोई प्रश्न नहीं करेंगे । यदि राजा अपने इस वचन को तोड़ेंगे , तो देवी गंगा उनका साथ उसी समय छोड़ देगी । राजा शांतनु ने देवी गंगा को यह वचन दे दिया कि वे उनसे कभी भी कोई भी प्रश्न नहीं करेंगे । देवी गंगा और राजा शांतनु का विवाह हो गया । विवाह के पश्चात दोनों का समय सुख पूर्वक बीता और कुछ समय पश्चात देवी गंगा गर्भवती हो गई । राजा शांतनु बहुत ही खुश थे और उन्हें अपने आने वाले युवराज की बेसब्री से प्रतीक्षा थी। समय आने पर देवी गंगा ने एक पुत्र को जन्म दिया । परंतु जन्म के बाद ही वे उस पुत्र को नदी के तट पर ले गई और ले जाकर उसे नदी में बहा दिया । राजा शांतनु देवी गंगा के पीछे पीछे आए और यह सब देखते रहे , लेकिन उन्होंने देवी गंगा से कोई भी प्रश्न नहीं किया क्योंकि उन्होंने देवी गंगा को वचन दिया था । उन्हें डर था कि कहीं उनके प्रश्न पूछने पर देवी गंगा उन्हें छोड़कर ना चली जाए । समय के साथ साथ देवी गंगा ने अपने दूसरे पुत्र को जन्म दिया और इस पुत्र को भी उन्होंने अपनी धारा में बहा दिया । इस प्रकार देवी गंगा ने अपने सात पुत्रों को अपने जल में बहा दिया और राजा शांतनु यह सब देखते रहते थें। परंतु अपने दिए हुए वचन के कारण वे देवी गंगा से कुछ भी प्रश्न नहीं पूछ पाते थे क्योंकि उन्हें डर रहता था कि कहीं देवी गंगा उन्हें छोड़ कर ना चली जाए । राजा शांतनु बहुत ही निराश हो चुके थे । अपने ही सामने अपने सातों पुत्रों की हत्या का दर्द उन्हें असहनीय पीड़ा दे रहा था । और समय के साथ-साथ देवी गंगा ने आठवें पुत्र को जन्म दिया । आठवे पुत्र को भी लेकर देवी गंगा नदी के तट पर गई और जैसे ही वे उस पुत्र को बहाने लगी तभी राजा शांतनु से रहा नही गया और उन्होने देवी गंगा से अपना पुत्र छीन लिया और उन से क्रोधित होकर पूछा कि वे ऐसा क्यों कर रही है ? तब देवी गंगा बोली कि – मैं एक देवनदी हूं और जिन सातों पुत्रों को मैंने नदी में अपने जल में प्रवाहित किया है वे सब श्रापित वसु थें । राजा शांतनु को बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ और उन्होंने देवी गंगा से इस सारे रहस्य को बताने को कहा । तब देवी गंगा ने बताया कि – एक बार द्यों आदि आठ वसुओं ने ऋषि वशिष्ठ की गाय को चुरा लिया था । जिसके कारण ऋषि वशिष्ठ ने इन आठों वसुओं को श्राप दे दिया कि ये सब मृत्यु लोक में मनुष्य योनि में जन्म लेंगे और इन सबको उस जन्म में घोर कष्ट उठाना पड़ेगा । तब वसुओ की पुकार सुनकर मैंने उनसे कहा कि मैं उन आठों वसुओं को अपने गर्भ में धारण करूंगी और उन्हें अपने जल में प्रवाहित करके तुरंत मोक्ष दे दूंगी । अपने सात पुत्रों को तो मैंने मोक्ष दे दिया और उन्हें इस जन्म में होने वाले घोर कष्ट से बचा लिया । परंतु यह आठवां द्यो नाम का वसु था जिसे मैं मोक्ष प्रदान करने वाली थी। अगर आप मुझे ना रोकते तो हमारा अगला पुत्र इस संसार के लिए वरदान होता । और इस आठवे वसु को भी मुक्ति मिल जाती । परन्तु इसे अब पृथ्वी पर रहकर घोर कष्ट उठाने पड़ेंगे । आपने अपने वचन को तोड़ा है , इसलिए अब मैं आपके पास नहीं रहूंगी । मां के अभाव में एक शिशु का अच्छी तरह से पालन पोषण नहीं हो सकता । इसलिए मैं अपने पुत्र को अपने साथ लेकर जा रही हूं और इसे आपके परिवार के योग्य बना कर इसे कुछ वर्षों पश्चात आपको लौटा दूंगी । ऐसा कहकर देवी गंगा वहां से अपने पुत्र को लेकर अपने लोक चली गई । देवी गंगा ने अपने पुत्र को सारी विद्याओं में निपुण कर दिया और उसे युद्ध कौशल भी सिखाया । देवी गंगा के आठवें पुत्र का नाम देवव्रत था । उस तरफ राजा शांतनु हस्तिनापुर में बहुत ही निराश हो चुके थे । वे हमेशा देवी गंगा और अपने पुत्र के बारे में ही सोचा करते थे । वे प्रतिदिन गंगा नदी के तट पर जाया करते थे । उन्हें बस इस एक बात की ही आशा थी कि कब देवी गंगा उन्हें उनका पुत्र लौटाएंगी । जब देवव्रत किशोर अवस्था मे आ गए। उन्हे धर्म, अधर्म, नीति, शास्त्र सबका ज्ञान हो चुका था । तब देवी गंगा ने उचित समय समझा । और अपने पुत्र देवव्रत को लेकर राजा शांतनु के पास आई और उन्हें उनका पुत्र लौटा दिया । बाद में, इन्हीं देवव्रत ने अपने पिता का दूसरा विवाह सत्यवती से करने के लिए और सत्यवती की संतान को ही हस्तिनापुर का राज्य देने के लिए भीष्म प्रतिज्ञा की थी कि – वे आजीवन विवाह नही करेंगे और सदा ब्रह्मचारी व्रत का पालन करेंगे । इसी कठोर प्रतिज्ञा के कारण उनका नाम भीष्म पड़ा । और आगे चलकर वे कौरव और पांडवों के भीष्म पितामह कहलाए ।

It is about the time when the king of Hastinapur used to be Shantanu. One day King Shantanu went to the forest to play hunting and came to the banks of the river Ganges while playing hunting. On the bank of river Ganges he saw a very beautiful woman. On which he was fascinated and asked the woman her introduction? The woman said that - My name is Ganga, I am God river Ganga. Now King Shantanu came every day on the banks of river Ganges to meet Goddess Ganga. And one day he proposed marriage to Goddess Ganga. Goddess Ganga accepted his proposal, but asked him for an undertaking that after marriage, the king would never question the work done by Goddess Ganga. If the king breaks this promise, then Goddess Ganga will leave his side at the same time. King Shantanu gave a promise to Goddess Ganga that he would never ask any question to her. Goddess Ganga and King Shantanu got married. After marriage, the time of both of them passed happily and after some time Goddess Ganga became pregnant. King Shantanu was very happy and he was eagerly waiting for his coming crown prince. When the time came, Goddess Ganga gave birth to a son. But only after birth, she took that son to the bank of the river and carried him away and threw him in the river. King Shantanu followed Devi Ganga and kept watching all this, but he did not ask any question to Goddess Ganga because he had made a promise to Goddess Ganga. He was afraid that on asking his questions, Goddess Ganga might leave him. In course of time, Goddess Ganga gave birth to her second son and she also shed this son in her stream. Thus Goddess Ganga drowned her seven sons in her water and King Shantanu used to watch all this. But due to his promise, he could not ask any question to Goddess Ganga because he was afraid that Goddess Ganga might leave him. King Shantanu was very disappointed. The pain of killing his seven sons in front of himself was giving him unbearable pain. And with the passage of time, Goddess Ganga gave birth to an eighth son. The goddess went to the banks of the river Ganges with the eighth son also and as soon as she started shedding that son, the king could not stay with Shantanu and he snatched his son from the goddess Ganga and asked her why she was doing this. ? Then Goddess Ganga said that - I am a Devnadi and all the seven sons whom I have flown in my water in the river were all cursed Vasus. King Shantanu was very surprised and asked Goddess Ganga to tell all this secret. Then Goddess Ganga told that – Once the eight Vasus had stolen the cow of sage Vashistha. Due to which sage Vashishtha cursed these eight Vasus that all these people will be born in the world of death in human vagina and all of them will have to suffer a lot in that birth. Then hearing the call of the Vasus, I told them that I would conceive those eight Vasus in my womb and would give them salvation immediately by flowing them in my water. I have given salvation to my seven sons and saved them from the great suffering in this birth. But it was the eighth Vasu named Dyo whom I was going to give salvation. If you had not stopped me, our next son would have been a boon to this world. And this eighth Vasu would also get liberation. But now he will have to suffer a lot while staying on earth. You have broken your promise, so I will no longer be with you. In the absence of a mother, an infant cannot be brought up well. That's why I am taking my son with me and after making it fit for your family, I will return it to you after a few years. Saying this, Goddess Ganga went to her world with her son from there. Goddess Ganga made her son proficient in all the disciplines and also taught him fighting skills. The name of the eighth son of Goddess Ganga was Devavrata. On that side, King Shantanu had become very disappointed in Hastinapur. He always thought only of Goddess Ganga and his son. He used to go to the banks of the Ganges river every day. He had only hope of this one thing that when Goddess Ganga would return his son to him. When Devavrat reached adolescence. He had got the knowledge of all religion, adharma, policy, scriptures. Then Goddess Ganga understood the right time. And the king came to Shantanu with her son Devavrat and returned his son to him. Later, this same Devavrat had made a Bhishma vow to give his father's second marriage to Satyavati and to give the kingdom of Hastinapur to Satyavati's children only – that they would not marry for life and would always observe the Brahmachari Vrat. Due to this strict vow, he got the name Bhishma. And later on he was called Bhishma Pitamah of Kauravas and Pandavas.
