संत एकनाथ जी महाराष्ट्र के बहुत ही प्रसिद्ध संत थे । गुरु की कृपा और अपनी तपस्या से इन्होंने अल्पायु में ही भगवान दत्तात्रेय का दर्शन कर लिया था । एकनाथ जी बड़े ही सरल स्वभाव के और परोपकारी थे ।
एक दिन संत एकनाथ जी ने सोचा कि प्रयाग में जाकर त्रिवेणी में स्नान करें और त्रिवेणी से जल भरकर श्री रामेश्वरम पर चढ़ाएं । एकनाथ जी कुछ संतो को साथ लेकर प्रयाग आए। वहां पर आकर त्रिवेणी में स्नान किया और कावड़ में जल भरकर श्री रामेश्वरम के लिए यात्रा पर चल दिए । नंगे पैर चलते-चलते एकनाथ जी के पैरों में छाले भी पड़ गए थें । परन्तु न तो उन्हें भूख और प्यास की चिंता थी और ना ही तेज धूप की । उन्हें तो सिर्फ रामेश्वरम जाकर जल चढ़ाने की धुन लगी हुई थी । काफी समय से सफर तय करते हुए श्री एकनाथ जी ने काफी लंबी दूरी तय कर ली थी और उन्होंने बीच-बीच में कई जगह विश्राम भी किया था । लेकिन उनको इस बात की प्रसन्नता थी कि रामेश्वर अब थोड़ी ही दूर है और अब वे जाकर अपने प्रभु पर जल चढ़ाएंगे और उनके दर्शन करेंगे । चलते – चलते तभी एकनाथ जी ने देखा कि थोड़ी ही दूर एक गधा प्यास के मारे तड़प रहा है । और ठीक से चल भी नहीं पा रहा है । संतो के मन में गधे को देखकर दया आई किंतु उन्हें तो अपना जल श्री रामेश्वरम जी पर जाकर चढ़ाना था । इसलिए संतों ने उस गधे की कुछ भी मदद नहीं की। उस क्षेत्र में कहीं दूर दूर तक जल नही था । गधा सभी जल ले जाने वालों की ओर बड़ी ही दीनता से देख रहा था । किंतु किसी ने भी उसे जल नहीं पिलाया और सब आगे चले जा रहे थे । किंतु एकनाथ जी बहुत ही दयालु स्वभाव के थे । उन्होंने बिना देरी किए अपनी कावड़ का जल , जो कि उन्हें रामेश्वरम पर चढ़ाना था , वह उस गधे को पिला दिया । जल मिलने पर मानो गधे को जैसे नया जीवन ही मिल गया हो । वह फिर से उठ बैठा और आसपास घास चरने लगा । तब संतो ने कहा आपने तो अपना सारा जल इस गधे को पिला दिया है । आपका तो इतनी दूर से कांवड़ में जल भरकर लाना व्यर्थ ही हो गया । तब एकनाथ जी बोले कि – ईश्वर तो कण-कण में है , क्या पता ? श्री रामेश्वर भगवान इसी के रुप में आकर ही जल स्वीकार करना चाहते हो । और वैसे भी किसी जीव के प्राणों को बचाना सबसे बड़ा पुण्य होता है । कहते है कि वो गधा एकनाथ जी के पास आया और उनसे मनुष्य की वाणी में बोलने लगा । सभी आश्चर्यचकित हो गए । तब गधा बोला कि इसमें आश्चर्य की कोई बात नहीं है , मैं तो तुम्हारी परीक्षा लेने आया था । तुमने जो जल मुझे पिलाया है । समझो वह तुमने रामेश्वरम पर ही चढ़ा दिया । क्योंकि मैं स्वयं शिव हूं । जो तुम्हारे धर्म की परीक्षा लेने आया था ।
एक और अन्य अदभुत घटना के अनुसार कहते है कि – बहुत से जो रूढ़िवादी संत और पंडित लोग थे वे सब एकनाथजी की लोकप्रियता से चिढ़ते थें । उन पंडितों ने एकनाथ जी के बेटे हरि पंडित जी को एकनाथ जी के खिलाफ भड़काना शुरू कर दिया । वे कहते थे कि – तुम्हारे पिता तो किसी भी छोटी जाति वालों के घर जाकर कुछ भी खा पी लेते हैं । उन्हें अपने ब्राह्मण होने का थोड़ा सा तो मान रखना चाहिए । पंडितों की बात सुनकर हरि पंडित घर जाकर अपने पिता एकनाथ जी से कहने लगे कि हम ब्राह्मण लोग है और आप इतने बड़े पंडित हैं ,आप को अपनी प्रसिद्धि का ध्यान रखना चाहिए । संत एकनाथ जी कुछ नहीं बोले । अगले दिन एक बूढ़ी औरत एकनाथ जी के घर आई और बोली कि मुझे एक हजार ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराना है । परंतु मेरे पास इतना धन नही है कि मैं 1000 ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करा सकूं । यदि आप मेरे घर चल कर भोजन करेंगे , तो मैं समझूंगी कि मैंने 1000 ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करा दिया है । एकनाथ जी के बेटे हरि पंडित ने कहा – ठीक है , परंतु भोजन मैं ही बनाऊंगा । तभी जाकर मेरे पिताजी भोजन करेंगे । बूढ़ी औरत ने कहा ठीक है , जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा । अगले दिन एकनाथ जी के बेटे हरि पंडित ने जाकर भोजन बनाया । एकनाथ जी जब भोजन करके उठने लगे , तब जैसे ही उनके पुत्र हरि पंडित जी उनकी पत्तल उठाने लगे तो जैसे ही उन्होने पहली पत्तल उठाई वहां पर दूसरी पत्तल अपने आप आ गई । हरि जी ने दूसरी पत्तल उठाई तो तीसरी पत्तल प्रकट हो गई और इस तरह करके 1000 पत्तल उनके बेटे ने उठाई । उनके बेटे समझ गए कि उनके पिता कोई साधारण संत नहीं है । बल्कि उनके पिता हजारों विद्वानों के बराबर है । यह देखकर उनका बेटा अपने पिता के चरणों में गिर पड़ा और बोला– पिताजी , मुझे माफ कर दीजिए । मैं झूठे पंडितों के चक्कर में आकर आप के विरुद्ध हो गया था । संत एकनाथ जी ने उसे क्षमा किया और उसे समझाया कि हर प्राणी में ईश्वर बसा है , कोई भी इस दुनिया में छोटा या बड़ा नहीं होता । हम सब उस ईश्वर की ही संतान है ।
Sant Eknath ji was a very famous saint of Maharashtra. With the grace of the Guru and his penance, he had seen Lord Dattatreya at a very young age. Eknath ji was very simple and benevolent.
One day, Saint Eknath ji thought that he should go to Prayag and take bath in Triveni and fill it with water from Triveni and offer it to Rameshwaram. Eknath ji came to Prayag with some saints. After coming there, bathed in Triveni and after filling water in Kavad started on journey to Sri Rameshwaram. Eknath ji had blisters while walking barefoot. But he was neither worried about hunger and thirst nor about the hot sun. He was only interested in going to Rameshwaram and offering water. While traveling for a long time, Shri Eknath ji had covered a long distance and he also took rest at many places in between. But he was happy that Rameshwar was a short distance away and now he would go and offer water to his lord and see him. While walking, Eknath ji saw that a donkey was suffering from thirst just a short distance away. And can't even walk properly. Seeing the donkey felt pity in the mind of the saints, but they had to offer their water to Shri Rameshwaram ji. That's why the saints did not help the donkey in anything. There was no water in that area far and wide. The donkey was looking humbly at all the water-carryers. But no one gave him water and everyone was going ahead. But Eknath ji was of a very kind nature. Without delay, he made the donkey drink the water of his Kavad, which he was to offer at Rameshwaram. On getting water, it is as if a donkey has got a new life. He got up again and started grazing the grass around him. Then the saints said that you have given all your water to this donkey. Your bringing water in the kanwar from such a distance became in vain. Then Eknath ji said that - God is in every particle, do you know? Lord Rameshwar wants to accept water only by coming in this form. And anyway, saving the life of a living being is the biggest virtue. It is said that the donkey came to Eknath ji and started speaking to him in human voice. Everyone was surprised. Then the donkey said that there is nothing surprising in this, I had come to test you. The water you have given me. Understand that you have put it on Rameshwaram itself. Because I am Shiva himself. Who came to test your religion.
According to another wonderful incident, it is said that - Many orthodox saints and pundits were all irritated by the popularity of Eknathji. Those pundits started instigating Eknath ji's son Hari Pandit ji against Eknath ji. They used to say that – Your father goes to the house of any small caste and eats anything. They should take some pride in their being Brahmins. After listening to the pundits, Hari Pandit went home and started telling his father Eknath ji that we are Brahmin people and you are such a big pandit, you should take care of your fame. Sant Eknath ji did not say anything. Next day an old lady came to Eknath ji's house and said that I have to feed one thousand Brahmins. But I do not have enough money to feed 1000 brahmins. If you come to my house and eat food, then I will understand that I have fed 1000 brahmins. Eknath ji's son Hari Pandit said – Okay, but I will cook the food. Only then will my father have food. The old lady said okay, as you wish. The next day Eknath ji's son Hari Pandit went and prepared food. When Eknath ji started getting up after eating, then as soon as his son Hari Pandit ji started lifting his leaf, then as soon as he picked up the first leaf, the second leaf came automatically. When Hari ji picked up the second leaf, the third leaf appeared and in this way his son picked up 1000 leaves. His sons understood that his father was no ordinary saint. Rather his father is equal to thousands of scholars. Seeing this, his son fell at his father's feet and said – Father, forgive me. I had turned against you due to the illusion of false pundits. Saint Eknath ji forgave him and explained to him that God resides in every creature, no one is small or big in this world. We are all children of that God.
