एक बार नारद मुनि कैलाश पर्वत पर गए । वहां पर भोलेनाथ और माता पार्वती विराजमान थे । नारद मुनि ने भगवान भोलेनाथ और माता पार्वती को प्रणाम किया । महादेव ने उनसे आने का कारण पूछा । तब नारदजी ने कहा कि हे भगवन , मेरे मन में एक प्रश्न है । तब भोलेनाथ बोले – कहो , नारद क्या पूछना चाहते हो । तब नारद मुनि बोले कि – भगवन , आप को प्रसन्न करने का सबसे उत्तम और सुलभ साधन क्या है । मैं आप से पूछना चाहता हूं कि ऐसा संसार में क्या है जो आपको बहुत ही प्रिय है । तब भोलेनाथ बोले कि – मुझे भक्तों का भाव इस संसार में सबसे प्रिय है । इसके अलावा मुझे जल के साथ बिल्व पत्र बहुत ही प्रिय है । जो श्रद्धा पूर्वक भक्ति से मुझे बिल्व पत्र (बेल पत्र) चढ़ाता है , उससे मैं जल्दी ही प्रसन्न हो जाता हूं । उसके पश्चात नारद जी ने माता पार्वती और भोलेनाथ की आराधना की और वहां से चले गए । नारद जी के जाने के बाद माता पार्वती ने भोलेनाथ से पूछा कि – हे भोलेनाथ , मेरे मन में यह जानने की तीव्र इच्छा है कि आप को बिल्व पत्र इतनी प्रिय क्यों है ? तब शिव जी ने कहा कि – पार्वती , यह बिल्व पत्र मेरी जटा के समान है । इस बिल्व पत्र के 3 पत्ते और उसकी शाखाएं समस्त शास्त्रों का सार है । बिल्व पत्र के तीन पत्ते ब्रह्मा , विष्णु और महेश के स्वरुप है । स्वयं महालक्ष्मी माता ने बिल्व पत्र के रूप में जन्म लिया था । यह बात सुनकर पार्वती माता को बड़ी ही उत्सुकता हुई कि आखिर क्यों महालक्ष्मी ने बिल्व पत्र के रूप में जन्म लिया ? उन्होंने भोलेनाथ से कहा कि हे भगवन , कृपया मुझे यह कथा विस्तार से सुनाइए कि आखिर क्यों महालक्ष्मी ने बिल्व पत्र का रूप धरा ? तब भोलेनाथ कहते हैं कि पार्वती , सतयुग में ज्योतिरूप में मेरे अंश का रामेश्वर लिंग था । जिसकी ब्रह्माजी आदि देवों ने विधिवत पूजा अर्चना की थी । इसके फलस्वरूप वाणी देवी सबकी प्रिया हो गई । भगवान विष्णु के मन में वाणी देवी के प्रति श्रद्धा उत्पन्न हो गई । विष्णु भगवान के मन में वाणी देवी के प्रति जो इतनी प्रीति थी , वह लक्ष्मी देवी को पसंद नहीं आई । वे विष्णु भगवान से रुष्ट होकर पर्वत पर चली गई । वहां जाकर उन्होने मेरे लिंग विग्रह की कठोर तपस्या करनी शुरू कर दी। उनकी तपस्या दिन प्रतिदिन कठोर से कठोर होती जा रही थी । कुछ समय पश्चात लक्ष्मी देवी ने मेरे लिंग विग्रह से थोड़ा उर्ध्व में एक वृक्ष का रूप धारण किया , जो बिल्व वृक्ष का रूप था । देवी लक्ष्मी अपने पत्तों और फूलों द्वारा मेरे लिंग स्वरुप की आराधना करने लगी । देवी लक्ष्मी ने करोड़ों वर्षों तक वहां तपस्या की । उसके पश्चात मैंने देवी लक्ष्मी को दर्शन दिए । मैंने उनसे उनकी कठोर तपस्या का कारण पूछा और वरदान मांगने को कहा । तब देवी लक्ष्मी ने कहा कि – श्री विष्णु भगवान के मन में वाणी देवी के लिए जो स्नेह है , वह समाप्त हो जाए । तब शिवजी ने कहा कि – हे देवी लक्ष्मी , भगवान श्रीहरि के मन में आपके अतिरिक्त और किसी के लिए भी प्रेम नहीं है । वाणी देवी के लिए तो उनके मन में सिर्फ श्रद्धा मात्र है । यह सुनकर श्री लक्ष्मी देवी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई और वापस वैकुंठधाम में जाकर श्रीहरि के हृदय में स्थापित होकर उनके साथ प्रेम से रहने लगी । तब शिव जी ने कहा कि– पार्वती , इस प्रकार महालक्ष्मी देवी के मन का एक बहुत ही बड़ा भ्रम दूर हुआ था । इसी कारण श्री लक्ष्मी देवी बिल्व पत्र से भक्ति पूर्वक मेरी पूजा-अर्चना करने लगी । इसी कारण मुझे बिल्व पत्र , उसके पत्ते ,फूल और फल बहुत ही पसंद है । मैं निर्जन स्थान में बिल्व पत्र का आश्रय लेकर रहता हूं । हे पार्वती , जो भी प्राणी भक्ति पूर्वक मुझे जल के साथ बिल्व पत्र अर्पित करता है । उससे मैं अत्यंत ही प्रसन्न हो जाता हूं ।
Once Narad Muni went to Mount Kailash. Bholenath and Mother Parvati were sitting there. Narad Muni bowed down to Lord Bholenath and Mother Parvati. Mahadev asked him the reason for coming. Then Naradji said that O God, I have a question in my mind. Then Bholenath said - Say, what do you want to ask Narad. Then Narad Muni said that - God, what is the best and easiest way to please you. I want to ask you what is there in this world which is very dear to you. Then Bholenath said that - I love the feelings of the devotees the most in this world. Apart from this, I love Bilva Patra very much with water. The one who offers Bilv Patra (Bel leaf) to Me with devotion, I become very happy soon. After that Narad ji worshiped Mother Parvati and Bholenath and left from there. After the departure of Narad ji, Mother Parvati asked Bholenath that - O Bholenath, I have a strong desire to know why you love Bilv Patra so much? Then Shiv ji said that - Parvati, this Bilv Patra is like my Jata. The 3 leaves of this Bilva Patra and its branches are the essence of all the scriptures. The three leaves of Bilva Patra are the forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Mahalakshmi Mata herself was born in the form of Bilva Patra. Hearing this, Mother Parvati was very curious as to why Mahalakshmi took birth in the form of Bilva Patra. He told Bholenath that O God, please tell me this story in detail that why Mahalakshmi took the form of Bilva Patra? Then Bholenath says that Parvati, in the form of light in Satyuga, was the Rameshwar linga of my part. Which was duly worshiped by Brahmaji etc. Gods. As a result, Vani Devi became everyone's favorite. In the mind of Lord Vishnu, reverence for Vani Devi arose. Lakshmi Devi did not like the love that Lord Vishnu had for Vani Devi. She got angry with Lord Vishnu and went to the mountain. After going there, he started doing severe penance for my penis idol. His penance was getting harsher and harsher day by day. After some time, Lakshmi Devi took the form of a tree slightly above my linga idol, which was the form of Bilva tree. Goddess Lakshmi started worshiping my linga form with her leaves and flowers. Goddess Lakshmi did penance there for crores of years. After that I saw Goddess Lakshmi. I asked him the reason for his severe penance and asked him to ask for a boon. Then Goddess Lakshmi said that the affection that Lord Vishnu has for Vani Devi should end. Then Shivji said that – O Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Sri Hari has no love for anyone except you. He has only faith in his mind for Vani Devi. Hearing this, Shri Lakshmi Devi was extremely pleased and went back to Vaikunthdham and established herself in the heart of Shri Hari and started lovingly living with him. Then Shiv ji said that- Parvati, in this way a big confusion in the mind of Mahalakshmi Devi was dispelled. That's why Shri Lakshmi Devi started worshiping me with devotion with Bilv Patra. That's why I like Bilv Patra, its leaves, flowers and fruits very much. I live in an isolated place by taking shelter of bilva leaves. Oh Parvati, whoever offers me bilva leaves with water with devotion. That makes me very happy.
