कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को देवउठनी एकादशी कहते हैं । इसे देवोत्थान एकादशी भी कहा जाता है । इस दिन श्री विष्णु भगवान चार मास की निद्रा पूरी करके उठते हैं । इस चार मास के शयन काल में विवाह आदि कोई भी मांगलिक कार्य नही किए जाते । देवउठनी एकादशी के बाद से ही विवाह आदि शुभ मांगलिक कार्य शुरु हो जाते है । इसी दिन श्री तुलसी जी का विवाह शालिग्राम जी से कराया जाता है ।
धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर से श्री कृष्ण भगवान इस देवउठनी एकादशी के महत्व को बताते हुए कहते हैं कि इस एकादशी के व्रत को करने से हजारों अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का फल प्राप्त होता है और मनुष्य के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते है ।
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार – एक समय एक राजा था । वह अपनी प्रजा को बहुत ही सुखी रखता था । वह धर्म का पालन करने वाला था । वह एकादशी के दिन किसी को भी अन्न ग्रहण करने नहीं देता था और ना ही किसी को अन्न बेचने देता था । एकादशी के दिन सभी फलाहार करते थे । एक दिन भगवान विष्णु ने राजा की परीक्षा लेने के बारे में सोचा । भगवान विष्णु ने एक बहुत ही सुंदर युवती का रूप धारण किया । नगर में सड़क के किनारे बैठ गई । उसी समय राजा का रथ वहां से गुजरा । राजा की नजर उस सुन्दर स्त्री पर पड़ी । उस युवती के रूप में ऐसी मोहिनी थी कि राजा उसे देखते ही रहे । वे उससे अपनी नजर नही हटा पाए । राजा पूछने लगे कि – सुंदरी तुम कौन हो ? पहले तो तुम्हे कभी इस नगर में नहीं देखा । तब वह सुंदर स्त्री बोली कि – राजन ! मेरा कोई नहीं है और मैं आपके इस नगर में आश्रय पाने हेतु आई हूं । परंतु मैं यहां किसी को भी नहीं जानती । मैं बहुत ही मुश्किल में हूं । राजा उस के रूप को देखकर मोहित हो चुका था ।राजा न कहा कि – तुम मेरे महल में चलो , मैं तुम्हें अपनी रानी बनाकर रखूंगा । उस सुंदर युवती ने कहा कि – ठीक है , मुझे तुम्हारी बात स्वीकार है । परंतु मेरी एक शर्त है , तुम्हें पूरे राज्य का अधिकार मुझे देना होगा । जैसा मैं कहूं तुम्हें ऐसा ही करना होगा । और मैं जो भी भोजन बनाऊंगी , उसे ही खाना होगा । राजा उस सुंदर युवती के रूप में पूरी तरह मोहित हो चुका था । इसलिए राजा ने उसकी सारी शर्त मान ली और उस सुंदर युवती को अपने महल में ले आया । अगले दिन एकादशी थी ।राजा ने और सभी प्रजा जनों ने व्रत रखा । लेकिन उस सुंदर युवती ने आदेश दिया कि आज के दिन अन्न बाजार में बेचा जाए और उसने घर में मांस पकाया । राजा से उस भोजन को खाने के लिए कहा । राजा ने कहा कि – रानी, आज हमारा एकादशी का व्रत है । आज के दिन तो हम अन्न भी ग्रहण नहीं करते , हम केवल फलाहार खाते हैं ।उस सुंदर स्त्री ने अपनी शर्त याद दिलाई और कहा कि राजन ! कल तो तुमने कहा था , कि जैसा मैं कहूंगी तुम वैसा ही करोगे । और आज अपने वचन को तोड़ रहे हो । राजन ! या तो तुम इस भोजन को ग्रहण करो अन्यथा मैं तुम्हारे बड़े राजकुमार का सिर काट दूंगी । राजा सोच में पड़ गया । वह बहुत ही बड़ी दुविधा में फंस गया । उसने अपनी धर्म पत्नी को सारी बात बताई । तब राजा की धर्मपत्नी बोली कि राजन ! आप धर्म को न छोड़े और अपने बड़े बेटे का सिर कटवा दें । पुत्र तो फिर प्राप्त हो जाएगा , लेकिन धर्म फिर से नहीं मिलेगा । इतने में ही बड़ा राजकुमार भी वहां पर आ गया और उसने अपने माता-पिता को चिंतित देखा । उनसे उनकी चिंता का कारण पूछा । तब उसकी मां ने कहा कि – पुत्र तुम्हें अपने पिता के धर्म की रक्षा करनी होगी । तब राजकुमार बोला कि पिता जी आप चिंता मत करें । बेटे का धर्म होता है अपने पिता की सभी चिंताओं को दूर करना और अपने पिता के धर्म की रक्षा करना । राजा अपने बेटे के सर को कटवाने के लिए तैयार हो गया । बहुत दुखी मन से वह सुंदर युवती के पास जाकर बोला कि – तुम मेरे बेटे का सिर काट सकती हो । राजा के इस वचन को सुनते ही वो सुंदर स्त्री विष्णु भगवान के स्वरूप में प्रकट हो गई । विष्णु भगवान बोले कि –हे राजन ! मैं तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हूं । तुम अपनी परीक्षा में पास हुए । भगवान ने राजा से वर मांगने को कहा । तब राजा ने कहा कि प्रभु मुझे आपके दर्शन हो गए , मुझे इसके अलावा और कुछ भी नहीं चाहिए । तब वहां पर एक स्वर्ण विमान आया । राजा ने अपना राज्यभार अपने पुत्र को सौंपा और अपनी धर्मपत्नी सहित उस विमान में बैठकर परमधाम को चले गए ।
Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month is called Devuthani Ekadashi. It is also called Devotthan Ekadashi. On this day Lord Vishnu wakes up after completing four months of sleep. No auspicious work like marriage etc. is done during the sleeping period of this four months. From after Devuthani Ekadashi, auspicious work like marriage etc. starts. On this day Shri Tulsi ji is married to Shaligram ji.
Describing the importance of this Devuthani Ekadashi to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, Lord Krishna says that by observing the fast of this Ekadashi, the fruit of performing thousands of Ashwamedha Yagyas is obtained and all the sins of man are destroyed.
According to the legend – once upon a time there was a king. He used to keep his subjects very happy. He was a follower of religion. He did not allow anyone to take food or sell food to anyone on Ekadashi. Everyone used to eat fruits on Ekadashi. One day Lord Vishnu thought of taking the test of the king. Lord Vishnu took the form of a very beautiful girl. Sitting on the side of the road in the city. At that time the king's chariot passed by. The eyes of the king fell on that beautiful woman. There was such a fascination in the form of that girl that the king kept watching her. They could not take their eyes off him. The king started asking - who are you beautiful? Never seen you in this city before. Then that beautiful woman said - Rajan! I have no one and I have come to take shelter in this city of yours. But I don't know anyone here. I'm in a lot of trouble. The king was fascinated to see her form. The king did not say that - you come to my palace, I will keep you as my queen. The beautiful girl said that - okay, I accept your point. But I have one condition, you have to give me the rights of the entire state. You have to do as I say. And whatever food I cook, I have to eat it. The king was completely fascinated by the appearance of that beautiful girl. So the king accepted all his condition and brought that beautiful girl to his palace. The next day was Ekadashi. The king and all the subjects kept a fast. But that beautiful girl ordered that food should be sold in the market on this day and she cooked meat in the house. Asked the king to eat that food. The king said that - Rani, today we have a fast on Ekadashi. On this day we do not even take food, we only eat fruit food. That beautiful woman reminded her condition and said that Rajan! Yesterday you said that you will do as I say. And today you are breaking your word. Rajan ! Either you take this food or else I will cut off the head of your elder prince. Raja went into deep thoughts . He got into a big dilemma. He told the whole thing to his religious wife. Then the wife of the king said that Rajan! Don't give up religion and get your eldest son's head beheaded. Son will be received again, but religion will not be found again. At the same time, the elder prince also came there and saw his parents worried. Asked him the reason for his concern. Then his mother said that – son, you have to protect the religion of your father. Then the prince said that father, do not worry. The religion of a son is to remove all the worries of his father and to protect the religion of his father. The king agreed to behead his son. With a very sad heart, he went to the beautiful girl and said - You can cut off the head of my son. On hearing this word of the king, that beautiful woman appeared in the form of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu said that - O king! I am very pleased with you . You passed your exam. God asked the king to ask for a boon. Then the king said that Lord I have seen you, I do not want anything else. Then a golden plane came there. The king handed over his kingdom to his son and went to the supreme abode by sitting in that plane with his wife.
